Why we're building IRL Corner

The person who walks their dog past your house every morning is a stranger. Your next best friend might live around the corner, and there is no mechanism by which you’d ever find out. That’s the small, specific problem IRL Corner exists to solve.

We tend to talk about “community” at the scale of a town or a platform. But the thing that actually makes a neighborhood a neighborhood is smaller and older than that: knowing names and faces. The borrowed cup of sugar, the watched house, the block party, the kid who shovels driveways — all of it presupposes a first layer of trust that used to form on its own and mostly doesn’t anymore. Technology had a lot to do with tearing that layer down. We think it can help rebuild it.

Not another Nextdoor

Nextdoor occupies this category and, in our view, failed the mission. It collapsed every distance into one town-sized feed, monetized attention, and became missing cats, gunshot speculation, contractor ads, and vendor ratings. None of that builds cohesion between people who live 200 feet apart. Address verification didn’t prevent it — the architecture and the business model caused it.

So we’re building the opposite on purpose. No feed. No ads. No comment threads, which is exactly where neighbor disputes turn toxic. No selling your data — structurally, because there’s no advertising system for it to flow into. The product is a consented, opt-in directory of the households within walking distance of your door, and it’s useful at five houses.

The unit is walkable

We measure in walk-minutes, not miles. The defining test is simple: the people your kids could walk to. That’s your Corner — roughly ten to thirty households, two to five minutes on foot. It’s where faces and names, borrowing, and block parties live, and it’s the only ring we’re building first.

Starting in a driveway in Delmar

You can’t start a Corner alone, and that’s a feature. Founding one requires you plus two other households — which means physically walking to two neighbors and doing it together, standing in a driveway, in about five minutes. The first Corner is our founder’s own street in Delmar, NY. We’re not chasing signups into empty neighborhoods; we’re aiming for one dense street that actually works before we think about a second.

Here’s the whole success test, and we mean it literally: our founder greets, by name, a dog-walking neighbor he did not previously know. If the app produces that, it works.
